1) Is it true that the Sony can only capture 10 minutes of continuous video, whereas the Canon can capture continuous video up to 4 GB?

2) Which one do you recommend? (Sony has 10MP and 5x zoom as opposed to Canon 8MP and 3x zoom)

If you’re looking for zoom, go with the Sony. If you’re looking for movies, go for the Canon.
They take about the same quality pictures in good lighting, the Sony has a little bit nicer of a lens, [in my opinion] but in poor or night lighting the Canon has better ISO performance.
Also, the Sony uses Memory Stick and the Canon uses SD and SD cards are used in many more places than Memory Stick.
Go to the store and try them both out first.
I love my Sony W170. It’s great. Bad things about it, sluggish to focus at the telephoto angle, it’s a lot slower than my sister’s pink SD1100 when it comes to booting up and shutting down. Then menus and screen on the Sony are superior though.
